5 Fun Senior Citizen Activities

Computer Savvy Seniors Nature walks and board games certainly have their appeal among America’s senior citizens, and for good reason. Activities that promote physical, mental, and social health are critical to maintaining a healthy lifestyle, especially during life’s golden years. Some, however, may wonder if retirement, or getting older in general, has to mean resigning to a life spent between the shuffleboard court and the bingo hall.

The answer: of course not!

The world today presents so many opportunities for entertainment, in so many forms. And, contrary to popular belief, many of today’s most popular activities can be just as enjoyable for active adults as they are for anyone else! Check out these ideas for fun activities for yourself, or for someone you love.

1. The Nintendo Wii

Pronounced “wee,” this gaming system has been extremely popular since its release in 2006. Yes, it’s for playing video games, but it is easy to set up and to use, and its interactive nature makes it fun for players of all ages. Many of the games require some sort of physical activity, promoting hand-eye coordination and healthy reflexes. Games like bowling, table tennis, golf, and baseball will get you moving, while Wii versions of board games like Pictionary and Yahtzee can provide relaxation and mental stimulation. The Wii provides a wide variety of age appropriate activities that will give you something new and nifty to do!

2. Let’s go to the movies

The film industry is as popular now as it ever was, so take advantage of that senior discount and enjoy some of the great movies being released on a weekly basis. This is a great activity that will get you out of the house and more in touch with the outside world and “pop culture.” The wide variety of movies being released, including movies with historical themes and remakes of old movies, make it easy to find a movie that interests you. So get over to your nearest movie theater and rediscover the joys of the silver screen!

3. The wonderful world of computers

Many active adults have a deep fear of all things to do with the computer. But the fact is, you don’t have to know much about them to use and enjoy them! By learning even the simplest things about computers, you can read (and, if you choose, write) blogs, online journals that allow you to keep up with current events, the lives of family and friends, or your favorite hobbies. Computers also provide good opportunities for journaling or scrapbooking, with many program options available so you can find just what you want. And of course, computers can be a great source of entertainment, allowing you to play games, shop, or have a video chat with far away family members. Have someone familiar with computers show you some of the things you can do, take some computer classes for seniors or just do some exploring on your own. You’ll be amazed at what’s out there!

4. Touchscreen fever

By now, you’re probably fully aware of the extreme popularity of the touchscreen.  Many of today’s latest technological devices, such as cell phones, music players, or tablet devices (like the iPad) use touchscreens, meaning you control them with a tap or swipe of your finger. But don’t pass this off as something only your grandkids could love. Many touchscreen devices are very intuitive to use, and can provide excellent entertainment or mental stimulation when your mobility is limited. There is an ever-growing list of programs that can be loaded to whatever device you choose – programs that could help you boost memory skills or brush up on your trivia. Give it a try, and see what all the hype is about!

5. Old fashioned fun

Of course, it’s important to remember that sometimes, nothing can beat the classics – the great outdoors, a good book, a fitness class, or a board game with friends. But try to think outside the box when it comes to choosing activities to keep you going, and, most importantly, try to spend time with other people. Whether family members, friends, or just a walking buddy, people will love spending time with you and helping you maintain your happy, healthy lifestyle.

The most important things to keep in mind are your health and happiness. Whatever you do to stay active, entertained, and mentally sharp, make sure that you are doing something you enjoy, and making the most of some of the best years of your life!
