Will the Neurospace Device Be Approved To Help Epilepsy Sufferers?

Neurospace device trials for the treatment of epilepsy sufferers have been on going for some time now. There have been some interesting developments in the trials ups and downs over the last four years. Neurospace has now been put up for approval to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The submission was made on 8th July 2010. Premarket approval for the RNS System has been requested.

The device, if approved, will help those epilepsy sufferers whose seizures are not controllable with medication. The device depends upon many sets of circumstances aligning before a positive outcome is possible. Before a patient is considered for the surgery, a neurologist has to identify which areas of the brain the seizures are coming from.

Once they have determined this, they can decide whether surgery is a viable option for the patient.

The surgery itself involves electrodes being implanted in the brain. These electrodes deliver a small electrical charge to the area when they sense abnormal electrical activity in the brain.

After surgery, there is a long period of attunement by the medical team. Adjustments are made to the equipment based on the data gathered between check-ups. Adjustments have to be made until the correct balance is achieved for that particular patient. Some adjustments can cause the situation to worsen this lasts until the next adjustment session however the trial has now shown that 47% of patients see a 50% or more reduction in frequency of seizures.

Dr. Vicenta Salanova, Clarian Neuroscience states,

“The longer the device is in place, the better the patients do”.

Therefore, this is not a cure but it brings a great deal of hope to patients suffering from medically refractory partial onset epilepsy. Watch this space over the coming months for updates.
