Alternative Treatment Options for Diabetes

Unique Therapy Options for Diabetics

First of all, there are two types of diabetes and the one you are diagnosed with will indicate which treatment options are available.  Type one, or early onset diabetes, is usually contracted by young adults and results in the body’s inability to produce insulin.  Type-two diabetes is much more prevalent in elderly or obese people and results in the body’s inability to use insulin properly.  While the symptoms are virtually the same, the causes and treatments are vastly different.  For one thing, type-one diabetes is always treated with insulin injections that allow the body to process sugars.  There is really no other option since pills would be digested before they could be of use.  So let’s examine the treatment options for type-two diabetes, which is entirely treatable and in many cases, curable.

  • Diet and exercise.  The absolute best method of treating and reversing type-two diabetes is by losing weight through diet and exercise.  This doesn’t necessarily mean that you should go out and pick up every fad diet on the block or start training for a marathon.  You simply need to adopt a balanced diet that is high in fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and lean meats, while cutting down sugary, fatty, and processed foods.  You should also drink plenty of water and consider cutting portion sizes.  As for exercise, literally anything that gets you moving will fit the bill.
  • Oral medications.  If diet and exercise just don’t seem to be doing the trick, despite your best efforts, you may need to supplement your routine by adding one or more medications.  Your doctor can offer you many options, but since most cases differ by patient, you may have to try several medications or combine them to find a dosage that works for you.
  • Insulin.  While this is the first treatment option for those with type-one diabetes, it should be used as a last resort for people diagnosed with the second type.  It is reserved for cases that are severe (extremely high levels of blood-glucose), long-lasting, or those that are resistant to other methods of treatment.  In the long run, you’re better off examining other treatment options if possible since many offer other health benefits and they may allow you to overcome diabetes entirely and live a long and healthy life free of daily injections.
  • Spa treatments.  Relaxing therapies designed to restore balance and promote complete mind and body wellness can be extremely helpful to those suffering from diabetes.  So scheduling regular spa visits for massage, hydrotherapy, chromotherapy, and detoxification can add innumerable benefits to an overall health regimen.
