School Districts Oppose Cancer Bracelets

Cancer has been known to cause suffering and loss. Many who have had the displeasure of meeting cancer in person have seen the divisive destruction of the disease, tearing apart families and loved ones with no discretion or mercy. It might come as a shock, however, that one of the leading campaigns for cancer awareness is having a similarly divisive effect on school districts across the nation.

The Keep A Breast campaign is under fire for their provocative new marketing idea. In line with many other cancer awareness/fundraising campaigns choosing to market to a younger audience through trendy bracelets with catchy phrases, Keep A Breast has developed a line of products, bracelets included, saying “i [heart] boobies.” Innocent as their intentions may be, school officials are displeased at what they deem is a sexually suggestive marketing ploy.

Specifically, the Clovis Unified School District in central California is among the latest to ban the bracelets from school, despite arguments from advocates of the campaign that it is all for a good cause. In many cases, feelings about the bracelets are fairly evenly split between those who view them as an education campaign, and those who see them as an intentionally inappropriate marketing scheme. Even among other breast cancer campaigns, there is disagreement as to whether or not the campaign truly serves its purpose in raising awareness.

Keep A Breast plans to utilize a vast array of methods to continue raising awareness in the young adult community, and all proceeds go towards funding further outreach and education endeavors.
