Alzheimer and Dementia Risks are Related to Diabetes Itself

According to the research carried out by California University and Mayo Clinic on more than 200 people with dementia and about 400 without dementia, it has been found that dementia risks in case of diabetic patients are linked to diabetes itself.

It means that if diabetes can be controlled for diabetic patients, the resulting vascular dementia can automatically be controlled and they can better their cognitive abilities.

In nutshell, we can say that vascular problems are linked to the dementia but can’t be seen as the real development of Alzheimer, though there are related symptoms and risks involved.

Normally, diabetic patients develop vascular dementia that affects the brain due to the decreased blood flow and can be better categorized as a result of blood vessel disease. The level of amyloid beta proteins found in such patients is not the main cause of dementia and the ratio of AB42/ AB40 is not that low.

The Alzheimer patients on the other hand develop the amyloid plaques in their brains mainly due to the low ratio of AB42/ AB40 and the aggregation of amyloid beta proteins. The blood samples collected from the dementia patients with and without diabetes show a significant difference in amyloid beta proteins.

Diabetic patients can see it as the side effect of their main disease and concentrate fully on the diabetic treatment. Both diabetes and dementia are directly proportional and efforts shall be put to control the diabetes first to get rid of the plaques deposits in the brain and treat the vascular dementia.
