My mother has suffered from sleep apnea for a long time. When I was a child, no one really knew anything about the condition and it went undiagnosed for a long time. She would fall asleep in the middle of every day activities, such as cooking or even driving. We learned to be on alert at all times to wake her. She received surgery and therapy many years ago and is now much improved. Her medical ID bracelets are always on hand in case something alarming happens, but for the most part, she lives a pretty normal life. It’s nice to see her quality of life so much better than what I remember as a child.

I was extremely nervous to send my daughter to kindergarten. She was diagnosed with hydrocephalus while I was still pregnant and we spent the next several years of her life in and out of the hospital. As a baby, my brother put a bean up his nose and ended up in the hospital. In the process, the doctors discovered that he had a heart murmur and he spent several months under intensive care. They were able to stabilize his condition and release him with medical ID bracelets. Years later, he lives a normal life and you would never know that he had a problem with his health as a child. Having elderly parents is a real challenge. I love my mom, so wouldn’t think to anything but the best by her. However, she likes her independence too and won’t even consider moving in with me. She does live in an assisted care apartment that has a nurse on staff and wears medical alert bracelets in case something happens to her. I still worry about her, but I do feel much better. It’s kind of funny that she spent so many years worrying about me when I was a child and now it’s my turn to worry about her. I guess that’s how it goes.

My mother in law is a fantastic piano player and plays for our church services every Sunday. She prefers to practice on the church piano over the one she has at home and got into a pickle one day. It’s been really hard having epilepsy. I never know when I’m going to have an attack and I have to constantly be alert to the symptoms. It’s especially an issue when I go out. When I’m with my family, they know what to do and what to look for. In a crowd, however, I feel much more comfortable wearing medical alert bracelets. It gives me peace of mind to know that they are there in case I can’t tell someone what is wrong with me.
