Everyday we exert ourselves mentally whether at work, or at home and it is our responsibility to replenish our bodies with food that will help sustain healthy brain activity. While some people prefer a strong cup of coffee to jump start their morning, others may get through the day eating chocolate, or candy. Although these habits are initially satisfying, they can pose a threat to your overall health if indulged regularly. The next time you consider having an ice cream binge, first consider a few of these natural foods that will help enrich your brain and protect your memory in the long run.

An often over looked snack that helps improve brain functioning is pumpkin seeds. These tasty treats contain a large level of zinc, which is essential to our brain and almost every system in our body. Zinc is stored throughout our body, which in return helps improve our cognitive skills and improves our short-term memory. A lack of zinc will result in poor concentration and lower cognition. The next time you feel yourself losing focus at work, consider eating a few of seeds to sustain you for the rest of the day.

Blueberries contain one of the richest sources of antioxidants, which can protect you from a number of brain related diseases. Adding this berry to your diet will not only help improve your short-term memory, but will also help increase your coordination and navigational skills. Antioxidants are essential to your body in order to support neurotransmission. Blueberries can help increase the elasticity of your blood vessels, which in return helps the blood circulate.

One of the best foods to eat for your brain is spinach, which can help protect our brain from oxidative stress. This leafy-green has the ability to rejuvenate our memory and can prevent age-related problems with our memory. An important ingredient to spinach is lutein, which is a natural bioactive element that can keep our brain cells from dying. Some doctors even recommend eating spinach at least three times a week in order to keep in tip top shape.

A great alternative to chocolate is the cacao bean, which has been used for its therapeutic elements for thousands of years. Don’t be mistaken by chocolate items that contain cacao. These are heavily processed items that will only hinder your brain health. Instead, be on the look out for products that are minimally processed and all natural. The cacao bean contains an important ingredient called flavonoids, which decrease the chances of cardiovascular disease and helps improve blood flow to the brain.

The next time you cook a meal, consider substituting butter with olive oil. This ingredient contains monosaturated oleic acid that is essential to normal brain functioning. Fatty acids in olive oil help protect our brain cell membranes and also keep our brain from contracting age-related diseases. Olive oil has been known to lower blood pressure and to decrease bad cholesterol in our blood. It also helps to keep our hair, nails, and skin beautiful.

The next time you go to the store, remember these items and implement them into your daily diet. Instead of grabbing a candy bar, eat a few blueberries or pumpkin seeds the next time you need an energy boost. You will certainly notice the difference as your brain responds faster and your memory becomes better over time.
