Governmental microbiologists are currently studying molds to find out exactly how they grow within residences and what impact that may have on residents health. The idea behind the research is to gain enough data to be able to devise mold resistant materials to use to construct homes.

The growth of mold in the home often goes alongside water damage or a build-up of humidity levels. Robert Miller, Microbiologist, states,

“A mold requires a dark area, a warm area and a place with moisture. So if you have a leak in your attic that would be a perfect place.”

There is a lot of controversy over what health risks are associated with molds. Some side effects are very common and have been proven beyond a doubt. Molds are a common cause of allergy symptoms and can trigger asthma attacks. What scientists understand less is the link between mycotoxins and chronic illness. There are many documented cases of mycotoxins passing into the blood stream and into the lungs causing irreparable damage. Fatalities are common but the mycotoxins do not appear to affect everyone that encounters them in the same way. Research continues in this area.

Homeowners and tenants should ensure that their homes are mold free by routinely checking walls, areas where condensation occurs and making sure that any leaks or water damage are dealt with immediately. Any source of moisture needs to be illuminated this may require the installation of a dehumidifier to keep humidity levels down. Homes should be adequately ventilated at all times. The “Fighting Mold” link below gives clear and straightforward instruction of what to do if you have discovered mold in your home.
