Hypo Alerting Dogs

A blessing to hypoglycemic Patients Dogs are trained to help deaf and visually impaired persons are not surprising news to us. But now dogs can help diabetic persons especially hypoglycemic persons by alerting them when their blood glucose level falls beyond threshold level.

Hypoglycemic patients have a high chance of danger, if they are not treated immediately after their hypoglycemic episodes. This is the point where dogs come handy. If you have a hypo dog, it will save your life by alerting you.

Every dog has the potential to be hypo-alert dogs, especially if they’re young. Training the owners is the most important thing, so that they will recognize the dog’s alerting behavior and then learn how to reinforce it to benefit them.

The March 2008 issue of Diabetes Forecast, the consumer magazine of the American Diabetes Association (ADA), features an article about assistance dogs that are trained to sense episodes of human hypoglycemia, or low blood glucose, and sound a life-saving alert.

We believe the dogs are picking up on scents that are created by chemical changes going on in the person’s body before we humans see the actual symptoms of the illness

says Darlene Sullivan, executive director of Canine Partners for Life. Some patients often have night-time hypos, which they can’t detect while they asleep, so having a dog that will detect them obviously helps them  to be confident and tension free.

Currently, there are only a few groups in the United States that are training assistance dogs to sense hypoglycemia.
