Good News for Students Participating in Track and Field Events
Its good news for parents of students and students alike as the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) clarifies its position on various matters.
The Field and Cross Country Rules Committee met and put forward several rule changes for the 2010-2011 school year. The rule changes have now been approved by the Board of Directors.
There were two changes that maybe of interest to parents of students who wear medical jewellery. The first change relates to the wearing of medical alert necklaces. Becky Oakes, NFHS assistant director and liaison to the Track and Field and Cross Country Rules Committee, said,
“with regard to medical-alert medals, which are not considered jewellery and are allowed, the rule now reads that the alert should be visible.” She also said, “The committee thought medical alerts that aren’t visible defeat the purpose of wearing information that may be important to those responding to an emergency, and responders may need immediate access to the alert.”
Then there is the matter of medical alert bracelets. Oakes stated,
“The rule has also been updated to reflect new technology in medical-alert notification items. Any bracelet made of metal or an unyielding material still needs to be taped to the body, but a bracelet made of pliable material does not require taping. Medals worn on necklaces of any kind still need to be taped to the body.”
Of course, the first rule change might bring a few issues to the surface with students that are not comfortable with displaying the fact that they wear a medical alert necklace. Often the choice of this piece of jewelery is because it can be worn around the neck but obscured by clothing. However, there are plenty of new style medical alert necklaces available on the market that should alleviate any such concerns.
