Tag Along to the Past

Listen up kids, because you’re about to get a history lesson. The medical tags and diabetic bracelets that we see today are actually inspired by military identification jewelry, or as they’re most commonly known, “dog-tags.” These tags were first used by the British Army during World War I, and the U.S. started issuing them to American troops in 1906. Today, these tags are worn in sets of two – one that can remain with a fallen soldier and one that can be delivered to the officer in charge of death and burial records.

The medical identification tags we see today serve a purpose that’s a lot less macabre – to protect and save lives during a medical emergency. What kind of medical emergencies, you ask? Any or all of the following:

  • Severe allergies or anaphylactic shock
  • Asthma attacks or respiratory problems
  • A blood sugar or diabetic emergency
  • Stroke
  • Seizure
  • Heart attacks or other heart problems
  • Dizziness or fainting
  • Episodes of dementia
  • Many other conditions
