Severe Food Allergies

Coping with Food Allergies

For all of us who reside in the area of Big Country, allergies are a year round issue with which we are quite familiar. Food allergies differ considerably from those in our environment.

The severity of allergies vary greatly from slightly annoying to deadly. Seasonal allergies pose less of a threat than say an allergic reaction to an insect bite. Considering the fact that the number of incidences of food allergies has sharply risen in recent times, we all would be wise to increase our awareness of them. When our immune system responds negatively to a food item ingested or that we are exposed to, this is allergic reaction.

The reaction may stimulate immunoglobulin E which will cause an individual to experience hives, strained breathing, unusual and frequent bowel movements, vomiting and/or passing out. Even more alarming can be a more severe reaction which may induce an irregular heartbeat and even result in death. Although the terms “intolerance” and “allergy interchangeably” are often used when allergies are discussed they really are not applicable. An intolerance to food usually involves an improper amount of enzymes needed to utilize a particular part of food.

An actual food allergy involves the immune system directly and can be far more threatening. Some foods are more apt to induce allergic reactions than others. These main culprits include milk, eggs, peanuts, wheat, soy and tree nuts. Allergies are not contagious nor are they passed on to offspring’s  although a child may be more inclined to have allergies if a parent does. There are no known cures for allergies so the best approach is to simply avoid the item all together. The Food and Drug Administration requires that these common allergies be identified on labels and many companies include information regarding the mere presence of them in a manufacturing facility.

Children with food allergies must avoid the specific food and learn the dangers of not doing so. Also of benefit to children with serious allergies are the medical alert bracelets they can wear to remind them and to warn others. Specific instruction regarding a child’s allergies should be given, with a Kids Bracelets for example, to everyone who comes in contact with your child including teachers, baby-sitters or other providers.
